The 1856 Flying Eagle cent was first prepared as a pattern in late 1856 as the proposed small-size cent in copper-nickel composition intended to replace the large cent. A base of original burnt sienna color flashes when light hits the surfaces and gives way to subtle touches of golden-orange and apricot in the fields.
