Hailing from a proof mintage of 600 pieces (a number that includes both the 1869 and 1869/8 overdate), this is one of the more popular dates in the series due to the limited business strike mintage of only 4,500 pieces. There is some disagreement over whether all 1869 proof trimes are overdates, but we note the present example displays little evidence of an underlying digit. A lightly toned example with clean mirrors that reveal pleasing orange-gold and steely-blue peripheral tints when rotated in the light. - Three Cent Silver
