The 1880 has the lowest mintage of any circulation strike Shield Nickel. Due to the low mintage, mint state examples are worth considerably more than proofs for the date. Many examples boast prooflike surfaces and are often confused for proofs, however, all MS examples have an "island" under the T in States on the reverse. This gem has the die marker and is absolutely a circulation strike! The central obverse showcases a semi-prooflike appearance while the peripherals and reverser are plated in a toned patina. Green, peach, and champagne tones abound and are enhanced by soft, cartwheel luster. An attractive piece that is always in high demand, yet rarely seen in auction. This is a perfect registry set addition! - Shield Nickel
